ARTIST
STATEMENT
I started to paint
I painted semi-abstract and abstract works in 1965,
when I was
still studying in secondary school. That was a period
of change and development when most artists were keen to explore western
concept of art and ideologies. I painted oils, acrylics and
water-color with abstract idioms for
as long as 25 years. But that failed to
satisfy my need to capture beauty in art. So I started to think I must find
my own way instead of follow the west to continue my love for painting.
After painting the same idea over and over again, I finally decided in 1991,
to paint my surrounding, related to my country. I started a
series of realistic works like the Old House Series, the Beach Series,
the Rock Series, as well as the series on pigeons,
heritage buildings, rubber plantations and Malay houses.
After painting for about six years, I strongly felt that artists have
to paint more figures or living things. So I started my Kampung Life
Series from 1998 until now. This gives me a lot of challenges, and let
me have the opportunity to think about my country, think about the art
trends in Malaysia. It is my hope that my art that remind
people of the richness of the cultural heritage of Malaysia will provide
a balance to the popular art trend today.

1965年，我在中学念书的时候，已经开始画抽象画。那个时期马来亚接受到西方现代美术潮流的冲击，许多画家都在探讨西方现代艺术。整25年，我一直以来都以在西方现代艺术理念作为绘画创作方向。后来，我开始感到抽象绘画不足于我表达我内心对[美]的细腻感觉。我在我所熟悉的环境里，发现了美的所在，
这种感觉不是抽象手法手能表现的.
1990 年，我开始以写实手法描绘槟城的老屋，旧街小巷，沙滩，石头，历史性古老建筑物，橡胶园和马来屋等系列作品。
后来，我被马来西亚乡村景致和土族优雅璞质的生活所吸引，我细心描绘他们所穿着的沙龙纹样，木刻窗花，草席等，很多的经验都是经过多年的研究和体会得来的。我的意愿是以自我的写实画风，致力以马来西亚本土绘画艺术以平衡世界国际美术倾向于跟风潮流。 |
