Artist Statement (2006)

Painting is a form of contemplation about life and existence.

After the Tsunami, Bali bom… the colours and the subject matters of my paintings have changed …I only realize this when I use black colour as the background for “Self  portrait 2006”.  “Black” reminds me of the stillness of a starless night when one’s mind is stretching out like arms to embrace the infinite world of empty vastness.

My recent paintings: “Buddha’s mother”, “Praying”, “Adoration and belief” have a religious overtone. My intention is to reflect ‘Humanity, love and peace”.

To delineate female faces that reflect beauty and innocence is a personal way to celebrate the joy of life and existence.  “Twin beauty” is a two in one portraiture of two natives of different eras. The colourful batik shawl and fan function as symbol of the continuity of Art and culture. To me Beauty and Art is timeless…
